Project Description

Adaptable Kitchen

This annex kitchen had to be functional as self catering accommodation for friends and family, whilst also being capable of future adaptation to become the principle accommodation of wheelchair users.

The odd shaped windows dictated the worktop levels. Where this was lowest, we simply placed a worktop at table height, with plenty of sockets and leg room underneath. The sink was put at standard worktop height so friends and family can use the sink without bending. The seamless red Corian worktops start right under the windows and flow down the back and sides of the sink. This means the sink unit doors and frames can be removed, the sink lowered and a pelmet fitted, so wheelchair users can tuck their chair beneath the sink, allowing them to comfortably use the sink area. The mid-height oven, pull-out cupboard and multi-drawer unit operating on full extension soft close runners, enable easy access to the back of the drawers and were also included with wheelchair users in mind.
