This Hand Painted Country kitchen was designed for a young family living in a beautiful old Somerset Vicarage.
Our clients wanted a kitchen that maximized their space and had an elegant period feel, but with the functionality of modern appliances and practicality required for a busy family life.
The kitchen colour scheme has been kept simple with all units being hand painted in a soft white and fitted sympathetically around the exposed beams and wonky walls. Worktops around the edge of the kitchen are solid black granite, while the more elaborate granite pattern on the central island picks up both the black and white of the kitchen worktops and cabinetry, and combines it with the browns and pinks of the Oak beams and traditional plasterwork.
The main design issue for this kitchen was that with four doorways, it needed to be both a comfortable workspace and eating area, whilst also being a real ‘through fair’. The family friendly design therefore kept all units around the edge of the room to minimum depth and included ‘soft corners’ in the form of beautifully turned pillars crafted into the end of all base units, rounded corners on the worktops and minimum overhangs. All designed to complement the elegant style of this period home whilst also help minimize any accidents should the junior members of the household and their friends be charging though!
The central island unit has been designed as both a great informal eating area and a functional food preparation area. The seating side of the island includes a secret ‘push to open’ cupboard hidden behind the tongue and groove paneling.
The island unit houses a child friendly induction hob opposite the working height oven tower and a sink opposite the Aga. To one side of the oven tower is a full height larder with built in spice racks the length of the doors and fully adjustable shelves which can be positioned and re-positioned to any height required. To the other side of the oven tower is a full height fridge; this bank of tall wall cupboards, the island unit and the Aga run, provide a great working triangle.
The island also includes pull out waste and recycling bins as well as an integrated dishwasher which has been hidden just to the right of the sink behind a door designed to looks as though it is a set of pan drawers. To the left of the sink is a matching set of pan drawers that although not terribly wide, are much deeper than standard drawers to enable the storage of full size pots and pans. The drawers pull right out on full extension soft close runners so all pans can be easily accessed.
